Ea Beck Water Vole Refuge Project

The Ea Beck is a tributary of the River Don, north of Doncaster, which suffered greatly in the 2007 floods. Alongside damage to property, the flooding had a considerable negative affect on the local water vole populations.

Funding from SITA Trust has enabled us to develop the Water Vole Flood Refuge Project which looks at creating additional water vole habitat near to the river Ea Beck. These ‘off-line’ habitats will be designed as a refuge for the species, enabling it to escape future flooding events as well reducing risk of predation from American Mink. As part of the work, we will be controlling and monitoring for non-native plant species such as Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed; two extremely invasive species which have devastating adverse affects on watercourses. In addition to the habitat work we will be conducting a detailed water vole survey along the whole of the river Ea Beck to gain a better understanding of the current water vole distribution.

How to get involved

The project will be running between from October 2011 to July 2013 so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved! We are currently recruiting for volunteers to assist with the water vole surveys this summer so if you are interested or would like more information, please contact the Assistant Project Officer, Carys Hutton by email  or call 01302 343556.
