Legacies

We are very lucky that Yorkshire has such wonderful and varied landscapes, which provide an amazing range of wildlife habitats. Life would be poorer without the wildflowers, creatures, woods, moors, fields and rivers that are Yorkshire's heritage and that the Trust aims to nurture and protect for this generation and so that future generations can enjoy it too.

Legacies are used to fund major projects and acquire new nature reserves; without legacies we could not achieve much of the work we do. The Trust has used legacies to provide protection for endangered species, educate and inspire our children, encourage volunteers to help conserve local areas, and buy important nature reserves, such as -

  • Flamborough Cliffs which are home to tens of thousands of breeding seabirds, including kittiwakes, fulmars, razorbills and puffins
  • Staveley Lagoons a wetland reserve near Knaresborough. We spent many years making Staveley a great site for birds, orchids, butterflies and damselflies. When the owner decided to sell the site, the member support and a generous legacy allowed us to buy the land and protect it for the future.

Here are some examples of how you could make a difference:

£500 : would buy pond dipping and other equipment for children
£1,000  : would provide materials for volunteers to build otter holts
£5,000  : would pay for paths and boardwalks for visitors with wheelchairs
£10,000  : would restore a wildflower meadow to its former glory
£50,000  : could help us to acquire an important wildlife site and save it from development - forever.
