Running Wild Celebrates its fifth birthday!

During April the Running Wild Project celebrated its fifth birthday with parties at each of its five sites. For the past five years the project has been at the heart of encouraging children and young people aged between 8-13 years old to get outdoors and explore their local environment, go wild for wildlife, get creative with conservation and learn about low impact living through a wide variety of fun, interactive and engaging environmental sessions.

The project has, over the years established a great working relationship with the City of York Council Parks and Open Spaces Team.   Practical sessions have occurred on five local sites, Moorlands Nature Reserve, Acomb Wood, Clifton Backies, St. Nicks and Fishponds Wood and focused on giving children the opportunity to make new friends, discover and learn about local wildlife, learn new skills and have lots of fun. Activities have all focused on nature and range from pond dipping, to bulb planting. The children are often given the opportunity to make materials, such as bird feeders, which can be taken home to encourage wildlife in their very own gardens. Running Wild has allowed not only individual children, but local groups such as Brownies, Scouts and local schools to develop their understanding of nature and get into their local green spaces and have fun.

Running Wild TAKE TWO!

From April, the project, as well as working closely with the City of York Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Team will also form a new and dynamic working partnership with the City of York Council’s Play and Youth Service Team. The project will also as well as running sessions for 8-13 year olds, extend to an older age range of 14 – 18 year olds, further aiming to empower children and young people to create fixed and permanent structures and give them the opportunity to work with local artists in the design and development of fantastic play facilitates on each of the 5 Running Wild sites.
