If there’s one thing that this project has taught me over the last year, its that working together is certainly the way forward. There are so many other groups out there, many with similar aims and objectives that it would be stupidity on a level with the invention of the chocolate frying pan, if we didn’t work together.
One of the best examples of this partnership working in the project so far is our relationship with East Keswick Wildlife Trust. They are based in the village of East Keswick, just of the A659 near Tadcaster. They were set up in 1992 when the purchased the 35 acre Ox Close wood and have since bought two other wildlife havens within the parish boundary.
We first became involved with the group after discovering that, through the hard work and dedication of there volunteers, they had created a very successful charcoal burning system within Ox Close wood. We realised that this was exactly the sort of ancient craft that people rarely have the chance to see in action these days and would jump at the chance to be involved. We were not disappointed with 72 people attending this whole weekend event. Since then we have also run a HSBC staff workday and a workday weekend for 16-24 year old Asian Youths from Leeds.
The group have been successful due to hard work, commitment and a passion for nature conservation. An example to us all!
